'Community Safety Reassurance' Scheme
The scheme places an emphasis on agencies working together to
make a difference to the older, vulnerable residents of Neath Port
Talbot. It aims to enable them to live with increased comfort,
security and independence and to provide a network of services at
little or no cost. It is hoped that by improving security at the
homes of vulnerable residents they will feel safer in their homes
and the community and their fear of crime will be reduced.
Services provided by the scheme include:
- Crime Prevention
Surveys
The Community Safety Team determine which security measures or
repairs are required to improve homes to an agreed standard
- Care and Repair
Household repairs and security work as recommended by the Community
Safety Team
- Fire Safety
Initiative
Partnership between the Fire Service and Age Concern. Replacement
of high risk household items to reduce the risk of house fire
- Community Service
Initiative
Partnership with National Probation Service to reduce distraction
burglaries.
If you are aged over 60 and would like more information about
this scheme, please contact the Community Safety Team on

'Stop Repeat Victim' Scheme
Home Office research has shown that a victim of burglary is at
great risk of becoming a repeat victim in the few weeks that follow
the initial break in.
The aim of the scheme is to reduce the number of repeat domestic
burglaries, offer advice and reassurance to the victim, reduce the
fear of crime, deter the burglar and provide extra security for
vulnerable victims to reduce the chance of a second crime
occurring.
The scheme offers victims help and advice from Victim Support
and the Crime Prevention Officer and they will also receive a crime
prevention pack. The pack consists of leaflets, stickers, low
energy light bulb, property marker pen and a personal attack
alarm.
Residents who are identified as vulnerable by either Victim
Support or the Crime Prevention Officer, i.e. single parent,
disabled, senior citizen, living alone and frightened or any other
person who is unable to afford and organise additional security
themselves, are given help by improving their security. A police
approved security company carries out the security work.
The scheme has proven very successful since its introduction and
has now been extended to provide reassurance to victims of crimes
other than burglaries. These include domestic abuse, hate crimes
and also vulnerable court witnesses.
'Forest School' Scheme
Safer Neath Port Talbot has been successful in securing funding
from the New Opportunities Fund of the National Lottery to
establish a Forest School scheme for young people.
The 3 year project "Opportunity Knocks for Young People" seeks
to engage with young people who are not achieving in mainstream
education. One of the opportunities offered to young people under
this project is the Forest School scheme.
Each Forest School scheme will run over a ten-week period and it
is intended to provide one course during each academic school
term.
Over the ten-week period, the students learn practical skills
such as fire-lighting, conservation and camp-craft and work towards
building and eventually sleeping overnight in self-built shelters.
They are taught how to use edge tools and the craft of "bodging"
which enables them to create their own mallets and stools from
pieces of timber. They also spend some time on team building and
problem solving activities in order to encourage solid team-work
and to boost self esteem.
The aim of this type of scheme is to change young people's
attitudes and lifestyles so that they stand a better chance of
progressing with their training and employment opportunities.

Safety Team on 01639 889162.

Mobile Phone Initiative
Corus supports campaign to curb mobile muggings
The 21st century crime of mobile phone and iPod muggings is
being tackled head on in Neath Port Talbot through an innovative
children’s safety awareness campaign.
The county’s 11 comprehensive schools are taking part in the
initiative – aimed at making pupils feel more secure - in the
run-up to the Easter holidays and beyond.
A total 12,500 children are being given safety packs including
holographic identity stickers, UV marker pens and an advice
leaflet. Schools will also receive an A2 poster highlighting mobile
muggings.
The project is the result of a joint venture between Corus and
the Safer Neath Port Talbot Partnership, which includes South Wales
Police and Neath Port Talbot County Borough Council.
Corus has invested £5,000 in sponsorship of the safety packs,
with the Partnership set to launch the campaign in the week
beginning April 10.
“Now that almost every child of school age has a mobile phone
and/or iPod, the police are increasingly having to deal with
reports of incidents involving bullying and aggressive thefts,”
said Neath Port Talbot Community Safety Project Officer Siân
Morris.
“The schools are enthusiastic about the campaign, and we’re all
optimistic it will have an impact upon the problem. We are
extremely grateful for Corus’s generous support.”
A further Corus/Safer Neath Port Talbot Partnership project is
planned for the end of October, this time in the form of road
safety for children through the distribution of 22,000 luminous
wristbands to junior school children upwards.
“As one of the biggest employers in the area, Corus takes its
relationship with the local community very seriously and is pleased
to support valuable projects like this one,” said spokesman Keith
Farron.
