If someone dies

We understand that it is a difficult time when someone dies. This section has been designed to try to make things a little bit easier.

Please contact us as soon as possible so that we can make sure that the Council Tax account is cancelled. We need to know:

  • the date the person died;
  • the name of the executor of the will (or solicitors);
  • whether the person who died was the owner of the property or a tenant; and
  • the name of the landlord if the person who died was the tenant.

You can give us the information by:

  • letter to the Council Tax Section at the Civic Centre, Neath or Port Talbot;
  • phoning
    • 1639 764567 (Neath) or
    • 01639 73152 (Port Talbot);
  • e-mail to council.tax@npt.gov.uk
  • calling at:
    • Neath One Stop Shop,
      Civic Centre
      Neath
      SA11 3QZ
    • Council Tax Section
      Civic Centre
      Port Talbot
      SA13 1PJ
    • Pontardawe One Stop Shop
      Holly Street
      Pontardawe
      SA8 3ET

If the person who died was the owner of the property, Council Tax does not have to be paid until six months after probate is granted as long as the property stays empty and is not sold or transferred to another person. (Probate gives the executors of a will the authority to carry out the instructions in the will.)
