Sole or main residence
This is very important when we decide who has to pay Council Tax and how many people live in a property.
Council Tax law says that to be counted as living in a property, that property must be your sole (only) or main residence.
Normally, it is quite clear where someone has their sole or main residence, but sometimes someone might have two homes (for example, a home in London where they live and work during the week and a family home in Neath Port Talbot for the weekend).
In these cases, the Council Tax Section has to decide which property is the person's sole or main residence. We consider each case on its merits, and to help us make our decision, we follow guidelines established from cases where the courts have made decisions on sole or main residence.
