Turning Challenges into Opportunities

18.05.2009

'Turning Challenges into Opportunities' is the message from the new Leader of Neath Port Talbot Council, Ali Thomas.

In his first address to Council at the Mayor making ceremony today (Friday), Councillor Thomas said it was the proudest day of his life and that he was humbled by the support shown to him by his many colleagues.

He paid tribute to former Leader Derek Vaughan and pledged his commitment and enthusiasm to keeping Neath Port Talbot the Best Council in Wales.

He also paid tribute to Chief Executive Ken Sawyers who is retiring from the Council in September.

"We are a well run, focussed and forward looking Council of which we can all be proud," he said.

"But, inevitably, some things must change.  We face a more challenging financial climate so we will need to press on with our innovation and change management programme.

"Our five year financial plan means that we are well placed to do this and my aim is to see costs reduced even further and services improved at the same time."

The Leader said that, although there are challenging times ahead, there are also opportunities to show the rest of Wales how these can be overcome.  He expressed his confidence that the Council has the strength and ability to meet them and turn challenges into opportunities to deliver first class services for all citizens.

He put forward to council some of its priorities for the next five years.
" Transforming health, housing and social care, to make sure the most vulnerable in our society is supported and protected.
" Transforming education and lifelong learning to give everyone a fair chance.
" Transforming the economy and the environment by progressing the opportunities for employment in these challenging times.

"I assure you that together with strong leadership, the hardest working Councillors and the best staff in Wales we will rise to the challenges," added Councillor Thomas.
