Policy for Highway Maintenance
This Policy covers the Council’s statutory duty, as a Highway
Authority, to maintain the road and footway network in a safe
condition with regard to the volume and nature of traffic
carried.
Aim
To contribute to the Authority’s Corporate Aims and the
Community Plan by ensuring that the adopted roads and footways are
managed in a cost effective manner that maximises access and safety
and minimises disruption to the user,
The Council will:
- Implement a Highway Maintenance Plan as recommended in the
“Well-maintained Highways” Code of Practice for Highway Maintenance
Management July 2005.
- Carry out Highway Maintenance in accordance with a Highway
Maintenance Plan.
- Seek to improve the condition of the NPT Local Strategic
Highway Network through a maintenance programme.
- Maintain the Non-Strategic Highway Network in a safe
condition.
- Maintain all adopted highways in a manner appropriate to their
usage.
- Wherever practical recycle materials.
- Liaise with public utilities and other stakeholders on NPT
maintenance programmes to minimise the number of road openings and
other works impacting on recently completed maintenance
schemes.
