Policy for Safe Routes to Schools

To contribute to Corporate and Community Plan aims, and Welsh Government objectives, of reducing child road casualties and improving children's health, by increasing the numbers of children who walk or cycle to school, which in turn will lead to a reduction in traffic congestion and pollution. In pursuit of this we will do the following:-

  • Kerbcraft Volunteers and children undertaking trainingPursue all opportunities for obtaining grants for Safe Routes to Schools initiatives;
  • Establish a rolling programme of schools at which Safe Routes to Schools initiatives are to be introduced;
  • Engage with schools and the wider community in the development of School Travel Plans;
  • Involve children, teachers, parents and school governors in school based initiatives for planning measures to address their needs and safety concerns;
  • Provide marked routes to schools which children can use confidently and safely;
  • Provide secure cycle parking facilities at schools where a need is identified;
  • Develop practical on-road cycle training courses for young people and adults;
  • Promote initiatives such as the 'Walking Bus' where younger children are accompanied on their journeys to and from school in groups, supervised by approved and trained volunteers.
