Communities First Areas

As from February 2013, Communities First has entered a new phase.  Instead of Communities First Partnership areas, there are now Communities First Clusters.  These Clusters are based on the 10% most deprived areas as dictated by WIMD.  In Neath Port Talbot we have four geographical clusters.  The majority of the Clusters encompass the original geographical areas.

Each Cluster has a main base from which the staff operate.   The Cluster Maps can be viewed at the bottom of the page.

Afan Cluster

The Afan Cluster emcompasses the following LSOAs –

  • Glyncorrwg
  • Cymmer 1 and 2
  • Gwynfi
  • Pelenna
  • Bryn and Cwmavon 3 and 4

Having a total population of 9,836.

The new arrangement will have a Cluster Steering Group that will meet on a regular basis.  This group will consist of interested parties for the area.

The staff team, based in Croeserw Community Centre and also having a base in Cwmavon Community Centre, work with the community in order to move projects forward.

Neath Cluster

The Neath Cluster encompasses the following Lower Super Output Areas (LSOAs)-

  • Briton Ferry West 1
  • Briton Ferry East 2
  • Neath South 1 and 2
  • Neath East 1, 2, 3 and 4
  • Neath North 2 and 3
  • Coedffranc Central 3

Having a total population of 16,266.

The new arrangement will have a Cluster Steering Group that will meet on a regular basis.  This group will consist of interested parties for the area.

The staff are currently based in the Melin Advice Centre in Neath East and also have drop in surgeries in Briton Ferry Library and a presence in Neath Civic Centre.  For further information or to get involved please contact David Edwards and the Neath Cluster Communities First Team on - 

Sandfields/Aberavon Cluster

The Sandfields/Aberavon Cluster emcompasses the following LSOAs –

  • Sandfields West 2,3,4
  • Sandfields East 1,2 and 4
  • Aberavon  2,3,4

Having a total population of  13,457.

The staff have various bases in the Cluster itself and have been working in the area for a number of years.

Western Cluster

The Western Valley Cluster emcompasses the following LSOAs –

  • Ystradgynlais 1 and 2
  • Ystalyfera 1 and 2
  • Gordre’r graig
  • Pontardawe 2
  • Glynneath 1
  • Seven Sisters
  • Onllwyn

Having a total population of 13,589.

This Cluster is quite unique in that it is cross border utilising two Local Authority areas.

The new arrangement will have a Cluster Steering Group that will meet on a regular basis.  This group will consist of interested parties for the area.

The staff team is based in the DOVE workshops in Banwen and in Ystradgynlais Town Centre with a drop in surgery in Ystalyfera Development Trust.

Youth

Youth issues are an important part of the Communities First programme. A Communities First Youth Development Team works with young people for the Afan, Neath and Western Valley Clusters.

Welfare Rights

Building on the success of the original Communities First programme the Afan, Neath and Western Cluster have secured funding to ensure welfare rights support is available to people.  Each of the above clusters have a dedicated Welfare Rights worker to be able to provide this service.
