Convergence Operational Programmes (

ESF

for West Wales and the Valleys 2007-2013
What is Convergence?
Convergence is the successor to the Objective 1
Programme. The funding has run from 2007 to 2013 and
covers 15 local authority areas including Neath Port
Talbot, with a total programme value of approximately
£1.4bn.
The emphasis during the programme has been sustainable jobs and
growth in line with the
European Union
(EU)
Lisbon and Gothenburg agendas. The application
process and delivery arrangements are geared to achieve a more
balanced delivery and focus on the core programme outputs of
increased growth and jobs.
Convergence Operational Programmes
Convergence is made up of two separate but complementary
funding streams: the European Regional Development Fund
(ERDF) and the European Social Fund (ESF) .
The ERDF strand of the Convergence Programme focuses on
the following Priorities:
- Building the knowledge based economy;
Strengthening the economy through stimulating enterprise and
business development;
Equipping the region with the physical infrastructure necessary
for the development of a modern competitive economy;
Promoting sustainable business growth and new business
opportunities in relation to future environmental challenges and
opportunities; and
Providing the physical and community infrastructure necessary to
support the development of a vibrant economy in which communities
can flourish and sustain themselves.

The ESF Operational Programme centres on the following
Priorities:
- Supplying young people with the skills needed for
employment;
Encouraging unemployed and economically inactive persons to
enter the labour market;
Improving skill levels and the adaptability of the
workforce;
Modernising and improving the quality of our public services
(Making the Connections).

The Local Authorities of South West Wales have worked together
to develop wider regional projects under these Priorities.
