Objective 1
What is the Objective 1 Programme 2000-2006?
Objective 1 was a programme of financial assistance, awarded to
regions within the European Union with low levels of GDP. The aim
of the programme is to improve the economic conditions of regions
that are lagging behind the rest of Europe, to bring their level of
prosperity closer to the European average. Between 2000 and 2006,
West Wales and the Valleys received £1.2 billion in Objective 1
funding, to be used to part-fund activities that will actively
increase GDP.
Objective 1 in Neath Port Talbot
The Objective 1 Programme is now coming to an end and projects
will end in June 2008. Many people have realised first hand the
benefits of European Funding. Local and Regional bodies across West
Wales and the Valleys have had support for projects helping the
economic, social and environmental regeneration of the region.
Millions of pounds have been awarded to public, private and
voluntary sector organisations, to provide new jobs and ultimately,
to increase the GDP of the Objective 1 area.
The European Office acts as Secretariat to the Neath Port Talbot
Objective 1 Partnership. The Partnership is set up to manage the
programme in Neath Port Talbot, made up on a thirds basis from the
public, private and voluntary sectors. It is responsible for
developing the Local Objective 1
Strategy which sets out the overall aims and plans for
targeting Objective 1 resources to areas of need and opportunity
within the County Borough.
Neath Port Talbot has been successful in securing funding for a
wide range of projects that benefit the local community. See what
kind of local projects have been
approved. A number of regional projects
impacting on Neath Port Talbot have also been approved which may be
of interest.
The next round of EU Structural Funding will be under
