Community Regeneration
The aim of regeneration in general is to enable communities that
have suffered from economic, social and environmental decline to
‘work’ again.
Neath Port Talbot Council is committed to working with community
organisations to help identify and implement community-led
training, economic, environmental and other initiatives,
particularly in support of the its Social Inclusion Strategy.
The Council’s Economic Development team can advise Community
groups and organisations looking to set up a business or any other
project beneficial to the local community.
Financial support can also be provided for equipment purchases,
feasibility studies etc.

Glynneath Training Centre
Glynneath Training Centre is a community based training
organisation located in the upper reaches of the Neath Valley. The
Training Centre occupies a former school building and has become
well established in the heart of the local community, offering a
range of courses that attract over 700 enrolments each year. It
currently employs in excess of fifty people.
In 2000 the Training Centre Coordinators approached the Economic
Development team for advice on developing their existing facilities
by expanding into semi-derelict properties next to the Centre. A
feasibility study was undertaken using a grant from the Council’s
Community Enterprise Development Fund (CEDG) and a business plan
developed to refurbish the properties to provide a nursery, cyber
café and fine arts centre. Following the study, a further grant was
provided by the Council to purchase the properties and acquire
nursery equipment. The refurbishment was completed with funding
from the Welsh Assembly Government, The Coalfield’s Regeneration
Trust and Neath Port Talbot Council for Voluntary Service.
The Java Bean Cyber Café and Rompers Nursery have now added a
new dimension to the Training Centre, making it easier to access
courses and helping more members of the community to improve their
skills. Glynneath Training Centre is now an approved Learn Direct
Centre, a member of the Community University of the Valleys, and a
Local Action Centre for the Neath Port Talbot New Learning
Network.
