Walk 10: Gwaun-Cae-Gurwen to Cwmllynfell

Walk Summary
DIFFICULTY:

Hard

DISTANCE:

5km each way linear walk

ALLOW:

2 to 3 hours each way

START:

The route can be walked in either direction, but going from Cwmgors, it starts at the registered footpath at the Uplands, Grid Reference SN 705 104. It crosses the open access land via Penhow, and heads towards Cwmllyfell passing to the west of the now disused Bryn-melyn Quarry. It joins the B road from Cwmllynfell to Pen-Rhiw-fawr at SN 742 120.

DIRECTIONS:

Bus 148 from Pontardawe to Cwmgors.
Bus 120 from Swansea and Pontardawe to Cwmllynfell (weekdays only).

This is an upland route, with no defined path. It is challenging, in that you will need to find your own route, using the Ordnance Survey Explorer Maps, Sheet Numbers 165 and OL12. The route is just less than 5km and crosses open moorland between the villages of Cwmgors and Cwmllynfell, giving panoramic views of the Black Mountain and the Aman Valley away to the east, as well as views of the settlements of Cwmgors, Gwaun-Cae-Gurwen, Tairgwaith and Cwmllynfell.

The route is rough underfoot, and is wet in places at all times of year, but especially in autumn or winter. Appropriate footwear and clothing should be worn, and you should be prepared for the weather to change.
