Neath Port Talbot’s Health, Social Care and Well-being Strategy
2005-08
‘A Healthy Future for Neath Port Talbot’
In the foreword to this important partnership strategy the
Leader of the Council, Derek Vaughan, and the Chair of the Neath
Port Talbot Local Health Board, Dr Ed Roberts state:
“We are proud to publish this first Health, Social Care and
Well-being Strategy for the people of Neath Port Talbot. We are
particularly grateful to the people of Neath Port Talbot who have
provided us with their views during the consultation. We are
encouraged by this participation and will seek further
opportunities for citizen involvement in bringing about the actions
proposed in the Strategy.”
The Strategy has been developed through the combined efforts of
Neath Port Talbot County Borough Council, the Local Health Board,
the Bro Morgannwg and Swansea NHS Trusts, the Council for Voluntary
Services and the National Public Health Service.
These organisations have together formed a ‘Health, Social Care
and Well-being Partnership’ which promotes shared vision, joint
planning and efficient communication between all agencies. The
Strategy also reflects the contributions of many other local
organisations and community groups.
The Strategy sets out how the partners will work together to
help improve health, social care and well-being for children, young
people and adults across Neath Port Talbot. Action will be taken to
reduce the inequalities in health and the high levels of long term
illness and chronic disease that affect local people.
Cllr Vaughan and Dr Roberts state: “We are determined to improve
things in the long term by focusing our efforts on tackling the
causes of ill health. Our Strategy will encourage people of all
ages to take care of their own health by adopting healthy
lifestyles and by making best use of the services available to
them.”
“We are also committed to supporting some of the most vulnerable
groups of people in our communities. To this end we have
established joint priorities for children and young people, older
people, people with physical and sensory disabilities, people with
learning disabilities, people with mental health needs and people
who have drug, alcohol and/or substance misuse problems. In
recognition of the very important role that carers, including our
many young carers, fulfil in supporting many people in these
vulnerable groups, our strategy also gives priority to developing
high quality support for carers.”
Through this Strategy, which builds on the Welsh Assembly
Government’s ‘Health Challenge Wales’ initiative, Neath Port
Talbot’s Health, Social Care and Well-being Partnership seeks to
demonstrate how our efforts will contribute to our shared vision in
the ‘Neath Port Talbot Community Plan’ of an improved quality of
life, health and well-being for everyone in our communities.
Enquiries about or comments on the Strategy are most welcome.
