Civil partnership formation

Civil Partnership Registration is for same-sex adult couples who wish to enter into a legally binding agreement.

The Civil Partnership Act came into force on 5th December 2005.

Every local authority is required to provide a facility for the giving of notice of intention to register a civil partnership, and for the formation of civil partnerships.

The Government has sought to give couples of the same sex, parity of treatment with heterosexual couples, as far as is possible, with the rights and responsibilities that follow on from forming a legal civil partnership.

It is possible to form a civil partnership in a Register Office, or at an approved venue which has a licence. A civil partnership is formed once a couple have signed the registration schedule in the presence of a registration officer and two witnesses.

A Registered Civil Partnership can only be dissolved through a court based process, similar to the divorce process.

There is no requirement for a ceremony as part of the legal process, but in Neath Port Talbot we offer choices of a ceremony to help make the day really special.
