Neath Port Talbot Council is planning to give its town centres a major boost this Christmas by offering free car parking at key times during the festive period.

To help increase trade, councillors are being asked to approve plans to give free Christmas parking in Neath, Port Talbot and Pontardawe Pay and Display Car Parks from Saturday, 15th December 2018 to Tuesday, 1st January 2019 inclusive.

This year’s proposed offer is an improvement on last year’s offer, including an extra weekend at the start of the free parking period.

Free Christmas parking is estimated to cost around £40,000 for the three towns, based upon the current tariff structure which has to be absorbed by the Council.

Members of the Council’s Streetscene and Engineering Cabinet Board will be recommended to accept the free parking proposals for Christmas 2018 at their next meeting on Friday, October 19th.

Neath Port Talbot Council’s Cabinet Member for Streetscene and Engineering, Councillor Ted Latham said: “This has proved to be very successful previously and we want shoppers and businesses to continue to benefit from free parking at key times, particularly during the run up to Christmas.

“We hope this offer will once again encourage residents to shop more locally in Neath, Port Talbot and Pontardawe over Christmas and will continue to support businesses in our area.”

The Leader of Neath Port Talbot Council, Councillor Rob Jones, added: “We recognise this is an important time of year for both families and businesses. We are encouraging people to support our local businesses and believe offering a seasonal reduction in parking charges will make this much easier.”

During the festive period, meters in the participating car parks will be displaying the free car parking.
