World Mental Health Day

World Mental Health Day – 10th October 2018

On World Mental Health Day 2018, Western Bay Carers Partnership Board want to raise awareness of the local assistance and support available to unpaid Carers who care for a family member or friend who experiences mental health issues.

Are you a Carer? Do you provide emotional or practical support to someone who has mental health issues?

You may not describe yourself as a Carer; it’s just what you do as a husband/wife, partner, parent, relative or friend.  Whilst paid care workers are employed to go into homes and provide support, Carers are not.

Being a Carer can be a positive experience, but it can also be challenging and exhausting both physically and emotionally.  You may find you have little time to look after your own needs, which can affect your health and wellbeing.

If you want to find out about the support and information available to Carers or want someone to talk to, then your local Carers Centre or Carers Service is there for you.  They will either directly assist you or point you in the direction of someone who can help.

Staff at the Carers Centre or Carers Service will spend time listening to you to find out what your needs are – everything you say is confidential (there are limits to confidentiality in relation to safeguarding).  They will help you find the best ways to balance your caring role with having a life of your own.

You can also contact the Social Services department at your local council; they will be able to provide information, advice and assistance. They will also be able to tell you about Carers Assessments. The purpose of a Carers Assessment is to find out if being a Carer has an impact on your health and wellbeing and to talk about what support or services you may need to help you with your caring role.
