NPT Bee Friendly

Neath Port Talbot (NPT) Council is encouraging wildflowers on the verge, by changing the way we manage grasslands.

In certain areas, we are putting away the mowers for the summer months to allow the flowers to grow. We will then use ‘cut and collect’ machines in the autumn to cut and remove the cuttings, keeping soil nutrient levels low.

By encouraging wildflowers to grow, we are supporting pollinators like bumblebees and butterflies.

Some of the listed sites are located at road verges and roundabouts and should not be visited due to risk of injury.

These sites include:

  • Coed Hirwaun Entrance
  • A48 Central Reservation Margam
  • Harbour Way
  • Saltings Roundabout
  • Stratton Way Roundabout
  • Pen-yr-Heol near Llandarcy Interchange
  • A4109
  • Fabian Way
  • Cymmer bowling green orchid verge

In the absence of any negligence or other breach of duty by the Council, exploration of these sites is entirely at your risk.

We are working with your ward councillors to determine the most appropriate areas where we can allow nature to thrive in your local area and we are keen to hear from any local community about how they think they can help us with the natural approach to verge management in their area. We ask you to let us know if you know of areas in your community that we currently mow regularly that would be suitable to establish a NPT Bee Friendly Verge.

Look out for the NPT Bee Friendly signs around the county!
