Barn owl

The Barn Owl is a bird associated with summer evenings on farmland. The white plumage is striking when the owl is quartering over fields at dusk. They are known for their shrieking calls which appear uncharacteristic for such a beautiful bird.

Barn Owls can be found in a variety of habitats but are mostly associated with open grassland, woodland edge and areas of mixed traditional farmland.  While there are very few sites where Barn Owls can be seen in NPT it is always worth keeping a look-out if you are travelling through upland farmland in the late evening or early morning.
