Fly-tipping

Fly-tipping is the illegal act of dumping items on land or water without permission.

Items might include:

  • electrical goods
  • furniture
  • building waste
  • chemicals
  • household or commercial waste
Fly-tipping of waste is a serious criminal offence. Those found guilty of fly-tipping will face a Fixed Penalty Notice (FPN) of £400, an unlimited fine and/or a prison sentence.

If you see fly-tipped waste:

Do not:
  • touch or remove the waste. It may contain dangerous or hazardous materials such as syringes, broken glass, asbestos or toxic chemicals
  • disturb the site. If there is evidence within the waste you may be required to supply a witness statement and attend Court
  • approach anyone you see fly-tipping

Report fly-tipping

We may seize any vehicles involved in fly-tipping.

We will take enforcement action against any offenders where there is enough evidence.

If you see someone fly-tipping do not stop them yourself. Try and take a photograph instead and note:

  • location
  • time and date
  • the vehicle's number plate
  • description of the vehicle - including make, model and any noticeable features
  • any phone numbers on the vehicle
  • the type of rubbish being dumped
  • description of people involved

We will also need:

  • your name
  • your address
  • a contact telephone number and/or email address

This information will only be seen by Council staff. It will not be shared without your permission, but we may be unable to investigate without this information.

You can also report fly-tipping to the Waste Enforcement Team during working hours on:
