Employing a Personal Assistant (PA)

If you are eligible for a direct payment you can employ a Personal Assistant (also known as a PA) to help with your care and support.  Employing a PA gives you the benefits of having more control over choosing who supports you and how and when this support is provided.

  • Personal care
  • Leisure activities

What support will I receive to employ a PA?

The Direct Payments Support Team can provide you with all the information and support that is required to employ a PA. This includes:

  • Planning the best use of a direct payment
  • Advertising vacancies to potential PAs
  • Arranging interviews
  • Checking references
  • Carry out recommended Disclosure & Barring Service (DBS) check
  • Advice on becoming an employer e.g. insurances, payroll options, tax issues, employment law
  • An ‘Employment Toolkit’
