Becoming a Personal Assistant (PA)

Social Care Personal Assistants (commonly known as ‘PAs’) are employed to support people because of their age or disability, to enable them to live as independently as possible. Being employed as a PA is not just about supporting someone with their personal care. The majority of PAs are employed to support people with tasks such as domestic chores and assisting people to carry out social activities.

PAs are employed directly by people who receive a direct payment to arrange and pay for their support. Personal assistants are not employed by Neath Port Talbot Council.

Register as a Personal Assistant (PA)

Complete an online registration form to begin the short process to become a personal assistant and be added to the PA Register. The PA Register is a list of PAs who have been deemed suitable for employment for someone needing support. PAs can match themselves to someone they would be interested in supporting by searching through the current PA vacancies page.

What is the role of a PA?

The duties of a PA vary widely and depend on what the person would like to do – what kind and when they need the support outlined in their care and support plan.

This could include supporting the person with:

  • domestic chores (e.g. cooking, cleaning, shopping)
  • social and leisure activities – (e.g. assistance to attend activities in the community)
  • work and education – (e.g. assisting someone to and from work or college)
  • personal care (e.g. assisting someone to wash and get dressed)

What training and support will I receive as a PA?

We will provide a full training programme which will give you the skills and confidence you need to carry out your job effectively. This includes fully accredited courses such as manual handling, food hygiene, safeguarding and first aid.

Our dedicated Direct Payments Support Service will assist you through the whole process of becoming a PA and can also provide you with on-going support.

How do I become a PA?

You can register to begin the process to become an approved PA by completing our online form.

After completing the online registration form, a member of the Direct Payments Support Service will contact you to begin the process to be placed on the PA Register. The process will include carrying out a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check, signing the PA Code of Conduct, identifying training opportunities and answering any queries you may have.  

 

How do I view the current vacancies that are available?

You can apply for PA vacancies through our ‘Current Vacancies’ page. You do not have to wait to become an approved PA before starting to apply for vacancies.
