Charitable collections
If you wish to collect money or items to sell for charitable purposes you require either a house to house licence or street collection permit.
Street collections
Any collections carried out for charity in a public place, whether or not it is in a public street, will need a street collection permit.
Direct debit fund-raising is not covered by the legislation and doesn’t need a permit.
Collections are generally only permitted on Fridays and Saturdays, because of this only one collection can take place at any one time in each town centre within the Borough, the earlier you request a date the more likely you are to get the date you want. If the date you want is already booked up, we will offer you other dates.
After your collection has taken place you have 1 month to submit a statement of accounts. This shows the amount raised, expenditure and final amount collected for the given organisation.
House to house collections
If your planned charity collection is from door to door, shop to shop or public house to public house, then it needs a house to house permit.
Some national charities gain exemption from the Home Office and do not need a collection permit. There is only a need to notify us of the dates and places of collection in such cases.
