Become a Shared Lives Carer
Long term and Respite Opportunities Available
Do you have a warm, welcoming home and a genuine desire to make a difference in someone’s life?
West Glamorgan Shared Lives is recruiting Shared Lives Carers to provide long term and respite support for adults across the region. Shared Lives is often described as “like fostering, but for adults” – offering people the chance to live as part of a family or household, with support tailored to their individual needs.
What is Shared Lives?
Shared Lives is a community based alternative to residential care, supported living or traditional home care. As a Shared Lives Carer, you welcome someone into your home and support them to live a full, ordinary life – as part of your household and local community.
Support can be:
- Long term – where someone lives with you as part of your household
- Respite / short breaks – providing planned breaks for individuals in your home.
Arrangements are flexible and carefully matched, with full support from the Shared Lives team.
Who can become a Shared Lives Carer?
Everyone is welcome, you don’t need formal care qualifications. We’re looking for people who:
- Have a spare room and a stable home environment
- Are caring, patient and open minded
- Can offer time, commitment and emotional warmth
- Want to support adults to live independently and safely
- Value inclusion, dignity and respect
We believe great Shared Lives carers come from a variety of backgrounds and life experiences. Therefore, your background, gender, age, religion, ethnicity, sexual orientation, or life experience will never be a barrier – what matters most is your kindness, patience, and willingness to make a positive difference in someone’s life.
If you have a caring nature, a safe and welcoming home, and the desire to support an adult to live life to the fullest, we’d love to hear from you.
What support will you receive?
Shared Lives Carers are self employed and are fully supported by the scheme. We provide:
- Full assessment and approval process
- Comprehensive training and preparation
- Ongoing support, supervision and advice
- Financial payments and allowances
- Access to peer support and Shared Lives networks
You are never on your own – the Shared Lives team works alongside you every step of the way.
Why become a Shared Lives Carer?
- Make a genuine, lasting difference in someone’s life
- Build meaningful relationships
- Work from home in a flexible, rewarding role
- Be part of a supportive, values led service
- Help shape positive futures for adults in your community
