Briton Ferry childcare is a not for profit daycare facility providing full and half day care for children from birth to eleven and for over twos we also offer wrap around, out of school and sessional care. We are registered for thirty six children in total children but admit a maximum of thirty three children in order to cover unforeseen circumstances. In line with our special needs policy, we also offer care to children with special needs and are able to provide additional support for these children with funding from “O Gam i Gam”.
We are open from seven thirty in the morning to six in the evening, Monday – Friday. We operate in the scout hall in Briton Ferry and have sole use of the building during the hours of business. We are registered with the CSSIW and are members of the Wales Pre-School Providers Association and Kids Club, two organisations aimed at improving facilities for children and young people. We also provide a pickup service from the local schools and home.
The main language of the group is English, though many activities are carried out through the medium of Welsh. Currently three members of staff are fluent in Welsh and all staff have received training to help them promote the Welsh curriculum. Where English is not the child’s first language, we will endeavour to learn basic phrases to help them to settle. Two members of staff have also gained their level 1 in British Sign language and are familiar with “Sign Along”. In addition, the person in charge, Rhiannon Phillips is a qualified teacher and forest school leader. Charlotte Davies is also a qualified teacher and both Charlotte and Gemma have completed level 1 Forest School training and so are able to assist with the Forest School sessions. Our building is mainly open plan subdivided into play areas we also have a separate area as a base for our under twos and a dedicated sleep room which has cots, beds and provides a restful haven from our busy setting. We have another sleep area for the older children and somewhere they can go if they need a rest. We also have five separate outside areas which are accessed from the main hall. One area has our large sand pit, water play and tunnels. The second area is for running, climbing and riding bikes. Our third area houses our mud kitchen sensory plants and is used for Forest School activities. The fourth area is our wild flower garden where we have planted wild flowers to attract bees and other insects. To the rear of the building we have our planting area and we have been growing tomatoes, lettuce, strawberries and herbs.
In line with good practice our under twos are integrated with the older children for planned activities .The registered persons, Rhiannon Phillips and Bethan Davies have been running the nursery since it opened in October 1996 and along with a dedicated team of qualified staff we provide quality, affordable childcare to the community. All children are offered:
• A planned curriculum with the emphasis on play and a wide variety of toys and play equipment
• Individual care and attention
• Fun and friendship with children and adults
