Applications are now open for a grant to assist low income families in Neath Port Talbot with the purchase of school clothing and equipment.
Known as the Welsh Government Pupil Development Grant (PDG), parents can claim up to £125 for each eligible child.
Parents can use the grant to purchase the following items:
• School uniform including coats and shoes
• School sports kit including footwear
• Clothing for extracurricular activities (e.g. scouts, guides, cadets, sports, dance)
• Equipment (e.g. school bags, stationery)
• Specialist equipment for subjects such as design and technology
• Equipment for school trips and outdoor learning (e.g. waterproofs)
IT equipment such as mobile phones, tablet devices and laptops are excluded from the grant.
The grant is available to pupils who are eligible for free school meals and are due to start one of the following school years in September 2020:
• Reception class in primary school
• Year 3 in primary school
• Year 7 or year 10 in comprehensive school
Pupils that attend a special school, special needs resource base or pupil referral unit and are aged 4 or 11 in September 2020 are also eligible for the grant. Plus, the grant is available to all looked after children of compulsory school age.
For eligible pupils due to start year 7, the maximum grant is higher at £200.
Councillor Peter Rees, Neath Port Talbot Council’s Cabinet Member for Education, Skills and Culture, said: “The Pupil Development Grant is important for helping pupils from disadvantaged backgrounds to overcome barriers to learning.
“One of our key priorities is to ensure all children and young people are given the best opportunity to become the best they can be.
