Composting is a simple way to make a big impact. You can compost your garden waste and most of your food waste.

Composting can:

  • help you save money
  • reduce your carbon emissions
  • produce rich, nutrient-dense soil for your garden

Wait for a while

Composting usually takes 9–12 months, and may take longer during colder months.

Creating compost

A mix of greens and browns is the perfect recipe for good compost.

Your greens are usually fresh and moist, whilst your browns are more tough and dry.

Do include

Greens
  • Fruit and vegetable peelings
  • Coffee grounds
  • Grass clippings
  • Eggshells
  • Hair and pet fur
  • Old flowers
Browns
  • Leaves
  • Shredded newspaper or cardboard (no tape or labels)
  • Sawdust or wood chips
  • Straw or hay
  • Pine needles
  • Egg boxes

Do not include

  • Meat
  • Fish
  • Dairy products
  • Pet waste
