Port Talbot town centre regeneration

This UK Government-funded project is made up of three parts:

  • refurbishment of The Princess Royal Theatre, diversifying and expanding its current offer
  • redevelopment of Port Talbot Civic Square into a multi-use community space and introducing green infrastructure
  • redevelopment of public realm at Riverside to provide green infrastructure and children’s natural play areas – phase two of the project when additional funding has been sourced

Work is underway, with an anticipated completion by Summer 2026.

Princess Royal Theatre refurbishment

The project aims to improve the town centre by:

  • diversifying and increasing its current offer
  • encouraging increased footfall
  • supporting local businesses
  • making it a more attractive and vibrant place to visit
  • significantly increasing the amount of green space, which will help to address rising temperatures, poor air quality and flooding issues
  • improving well-being

Civic Square redevelopment

The redesign of the Civic Square will provide a flexible space for markets, events and seasonal activities.

A new central feature will include integrated seating and planting, and the area will contain soft landscaping, including:

  • grass
  • shrubs
  • tree planting
  • sustainable urban drainage systems (SUDS) features/rain-gardens

The project will improve accessibility within the public space and create more attractive and accessible routes through to other areas of the town centre.

Modern paving types will be used which are climate appropriate and easy to maintain.

The car park will also be redesigned and resurfaced.
