Plas Cilybebyll Manor
Plas Cilybebyll Manor is on its way to becoming Neath Port Talbot’s first Net Zero Events Venue.
The venue is managed by a local family, who have realised a lifelong dream to once again harness the river’s power.
The micro hydro scheme is a response to the pressing energy crisis. It's a positive step towards tackling climate change.
Grants and funding
Amount awarded:
£117,134 from the Valleys & Villages Grant Fund.
Project features
The project has built an 11kW hydro station on a small stream next to the River Clydach.
The system includes:
- an intake
- a buried pipeline
- a small powerhouse building
A local supply chain delivered the project. This helps support the circular economy in South Wales.
Hydrolite Turgo turbine
The turbine connects to a generator that turns water power into electricity.
It was built in the Swansea Valley. It will support rising energy needs from:
- EV charging
- portable devices
- expanded events hosting
The electricity will be used on site and will help the venue run in a clean, sustainable way.
Electrical control system
The control system opens and closes the turbine to match the flow in the watercourse.
Designed by South Wales-based renewable energy specialists Elements Energy, it will:
- generate a yearly average of 33MWh with peak outputs of 11.3KW
- reduce emissions by approximately 10 tonnes of CO2 each year
Construction and civil engineering work was undertaken by Ammanford-based FLG Services.
Facilities
A new wheelchair accessible path connects the accommodation complex to the turbine house.
It provides a new attraction for tourists and educational visits for local schools.
It is also surrounded by the award winning, five star Swansea Valley Holiday Cottages.
