The Horizons Summer Cooking Project
The Horizons Summer Cooking Project, run by NPT Youth Service, gave young people a chance to learn to cook.
It also helped families who didn’t have enough food and supported people during hard times.
The initiative focused on healthy eating, food sustainability, and employability.
Grants and funding
The Horizons project is part of a bigger plan called the Employability anchor project.
This plan has £5.6 million to help people get ready for work:
- work experience in schools, so that students can learn about jobs
- early activities to help young people meet employers sooner
- job preparation design to building skills and confidence before starting work
- paid jobs giving real experience with wages
- support at work helping people succeed once they start a job
Project features
- Cooking sessions in a community kitchen
- Visits to Swansea Market and a strawberry pick-your-own farm
- Education on seasonal, sustainable produce
- Food Hygiene and Allergen Awareness qualifications
- Confidence-building and social engagement
- Pathways into hospitality careers
Outcomes achieved
- Increased confidence and social skills among participants

- Qualifications gained to support future employment
Making a difference
Young people helped to learn new skills, feel happy, and think about jobs they might like in the future.
It also worked to give everyone a fair chance and make life better for people in the community.
