Health and wellbeing

Many of the children placed at Hillside have experienced trauma. Our team works with compassion and care to help young people stabilise and feel safe.

We provide care that respects each child’s:

  • age and gender
  • culture and religion
  • sexuality and abilities

Health services

Children have access to a range of health support, including:

  • on site clinical team with various professionals 
  • speech and language therapists 
  • GP and nurses
  • opticians and dentist
  • staff trained in trauma informed care to diploma
    level

Healthy eating

We promote health and well being through food by offering:

  • a balanced menu created by a qualified nutritionist
  • meals that meet all dietary and cultural needs

Children are supported to make healthy choices and enjoy nutritious meals every day.

Learning 

We work with Cefn Saeson to provide high-quality education. This provides access to subject specialists and keeps professional development up to date.

Personalised mentoring

Every young person is supported by a dedicated mentor.

Mentors spend time getting to know each young person so they can offer the right support and build trust.

Engaging and responsive teaching

Our education staff deliver lessons that are:

  • responsive to individual needs
  • engaging and interactive
  • focused on building confidence and trust

Curriculum and accreditation

We offer many subjects and job-related courses, like those in regular secondary schools.

Young people have the opportunity to gain recognised qualifications through:

  • WJEC
  • Agored Cymru
  • AQA

We are a registered examination centre for all three awarding bodies.

Additional opportunities

Young people can also work towards:

  • The King Trust Award (various certification levels)
  • essential life skills (developed through consultation with our school council and internally accredited)

Activities

At Hillside, we offer a wide range of well-being activities that support young people’s:

  • emotional health
  • physical health
  • mental health

These activities help young people:

  • build confidence
  • develop resilience
  • form positive relationships

All of this takes place in a safe and caring environment.

We have a variety of spaces and resources to support these activities, including:

  • indoor and outdoor sports areas
  • outdoor gardens
  • sports hall
  • multi fitness gym
  • astro-turf
  • dance/ yoga studio
  • cinema room
  • music room
  • games room
  • hair dressing salon 
  • wellness room
  • other rooms to facilitate 1-1 or group activities
