Bus shelter improvement programme completed
08 September 2025
A total of 40 bus shelters across Neath Port Talbot that were previously in poor condition have now been successfully renovated and renewed.
This transformation is part of a new bus shelter renovation programme, which received £200,000 in funding from Neath Port Talbot Council’s Clean Up and Green Up Fund.
The Clean Up and Green Up Fund, totalling £4.2m, was approved by the Environment, Regeneration and Streetscene Cabinet Board to enhance the appearance of towns, valleys, and villages throughout the county borough.
The project was managed and delivered by the council’s Neighbourhood Services Team. To support the programme, the council’s in-house survey team carried out a comprehensive assessment of every bus shelter across Neath Port Talbot.
Each shelter was placed into one of four categories, helping the team to identify those in the poorest condition and prioritise them for refurbishment. This categorisation also supported efforts to improve standardisation across the borough.
Shelters identified as being in the worst condition were treated as the highest priority. These have now been upgraded to a new standardised blue shelter design, which will be rolled out across the borough to ensure a consistent and modern look.
Much of the renovation work has been delivered by Bus Shelter Ltd, the contractor awarded the project in 2024. Their team has played a key role in the physical improvements, including demolition and resurfacing works.
Collaboration has been central to the success of the programme. A land agreement with Linc Housing enabled the expansion of shelter provision on Bridge Street. In addition to external partnerships, internal collaboration has also been vital. Project Officer Steve Jones and his team contributed significantly to the completion of the works by carrying out essential civil engineering tasks.
Cllr Wyndham Griffiths, Neath Port Talbot Council’s Cabinet Member for Strategic Planning, Transport and Connectivity said: “The bus shelter programme is what our Green Up and Clean Up Fund is all about - enhancing the appearance and functionality of our communities right across Neath Port Talbot.”
Cllr Scott Jones, Cabinet Member for Streetscene, added: “I am delighted with improvements made to our bus shelters which is part of our broader mission to invest in public infrastructure and to improve the quality of life for our residents.”
