Foster Carers in Neath Port Talbot celebrate contribution of foster siblings

As part of Children of Foster Carers Week (from October 13 to October 19), Foster Wales NPT carers are sharing stories of how their children have helped make those in their care feel happier, more welcome, safer, and more loved.

Some people say the potential impact on their children is one of the barriers to becoming a foster carer, but many children find benefits to being a part of a family who fosters. Seeing life from another’s perspective can be an enriching experience that can help a child learn and develop as an individual. Children also find they can develop their own bonds with children who are fostered in their home.

Eleri, whose mum is a foster carer, shared her story and experience about fostering.

Eleri said: “I remember the conversation me and my mum had about her being a foster carer very well. She asked me how I felt about it as at the time, I was her only child and it would be a big change in home life.

“Having seen other members of my family being foster carers and the positivity and stability that they brought to the children's lives, I was so proud of my mum for wanting to do the same.

“My favourite memory as a fostering family has been the organised days out with other foster families, especially Folly Farm!

“ If I could give advice to other children whose family are considering fostering, you too can also leave a lasting positive impact on children's lives as well as your family.

“At times it can get hard or sometimes you feel like you’re having no effect on them, but even the smallest interactions and welcoming them to your home is already making a massive difference.”

“Me and my foster sister love to make each other laugh by being silly and playing together with my younger sister. We play board games and like baking and making a mess in the kitchen.”

Councillor Sian Harris, cabinet member for children & family services, said: “Fostering is a rewarding experience that can transform the lives of children and foster families. The role that the children of foster carers play is often overlooked, but their kindness, understanding, and willingness to share their home make a huge difference. They help create a sense of belonging and stability for children who need it most, and we are truly grateful for their contribution.”
