Special species
Neath Port Talbot (NPT) is full of different types of nature and wildlife. Its mix of coastlines, wetlands, hills, and old industrial areas creates the perfect home for many plants and animals.
Below are just some of the highlights of the species found across the county:
Sea Stock
A nationally rare plant that thrives on the sand dune systems of Neath Port Talbot.
Blue Ground Beetle
The only known population in Wales is found in Coed Maesmelin.
Marsh Fritillary
South Wales, including the Dulais Valley, is a UK stronghold for this rare butterfly.
Fen Raft Spider
The UK’s largest spider and one of the rarest, found at only a few sites, including the Tennant Canal.
Water Vole
A significant population of the endangered Water Vole was recently discovered in the uplands of NPT.
Deptford Pink
A rare wildflower thriving in roadside verges and brownfield sites.
Bats at Margam Country Park
One of the best sites for bats in the UK—14 of the 18 UK bat species have been recorded here!
