Claim backdated benefit

Normally your benefit will start from the Monday after we receive your application form.

If you didn't apply on time, you must request backdating in writing and explain the reason why you didn't apply sooner. If you have a valid reason, we will consider backdating your benefit on a case-by-case basis.

You can't get Housing Benefit until you've moved into your new home, so you'll need to cover the rent yourself until then. However, there are exceptions, so it's worth asking the benefits team for assistance.
