Gnoll Park & Brynau Farm

Existing flood risks

  • Enhanced flood risk at three ordinary watercourses close to Neath:
    • Gnoll Brook
    • Gnoll Park Brook
    • Llantwit Brook
  • During heavy rainfall our critical culverts exceed capacity
  • Flashy river flow is caused by sediment deposition upstream

Completed works

Preswylfa Dingle, Gnoll Park Brook Catchment

In-channel woody attenuation features, located at Preswylfa Dingle. These are used to slow the flow of water and capture sediment.

The targeted placement of these features allows normal flow levels to pass underneath. High flow levels are slowed and held back.

Brynau Farm, Gnoll Park Catchment

Alterations to Brynau Farm’s three major flow pathways in the form of bund and pond creation. This helps to slow the flow of water, with the ponds acting as temporary storage and a habitat for aquatic life.

Benefits

  • Improves community resilience and provides better flood protection to the community of Neath.
  • Creation of wetland habitat, providing benefits to the ecosystem.
  • Changing river behaviour, in this case making the flow less flashy.
  • Raised awareness of natural flood management features and working with nature.

Lessons learned

  • Gained knowledge of historic engineering practices to better shape present day drainage systems.
  • Stakeholder engagement identified local issues during the early stage of the project. This allowed faster identification of possible NFM opportunities.

Funding

The funding was provided by Welsh Government’s accelerator scheme.

The current investment value for this scheme, as well as future works in Brynau is in the region of £60,000.
