Grandison Brook, Briton Ferry

Current flood risks

  • The Pant-yr-Heol area of Briton Ferry has been subject to periodic flooding. The Grandison Brook Culvert has contributed to this flooding. Investigations found that the culvert is under capacity and needs to be enlarged.
  • Periodic flooding at Jersey Park Incline has prevented people from accessing parts of the park.

Proposed works

The construction works are likely to start summer 2026 until spring 2028.

Duration is likely to be eighteen (18) months.

Current stage

Full Business Case (FBC) stage. Construction is due to start in Summer 2026 once we get the necessary permissions.

The project is designed to handle the 1% Annual Exceedance Probability (AEP).

Benefits

  • Reduce the risk of surface water flooding for 380 properties in Briton Ferry.
  • Help protect Briton Ferry and Jersey Park from flooding, upto and including the 1% AEP.
  • Reduce damage and disruption on the A474 Neath Road, between Neath and Briton Ferry.
  • Reduce the number of maintenance call-outs to the Grandison Brook and JK’s culverts.

Likely disruptions

  • Ynysymaerdy Road closure for the duration of the culverting works.
  • Resticted access to parts of Jersey Park whilst work is ongoing.
  • Increased construction traffic along the A474 Neath Road, Old Road and Pant-yr-Heol.
  • No access to Briton Ferry playing fields for the duration of localised construction works.
  • Potential access restrictions to Carreg Hir school ground and car park.

Funding

The current investment value of this scheme is in the region of £9.5m.
