Flood Risk Management Act 2010
We are responsible for preventing and reducing flood risks.
Our work is led by the following regulations:
Flooding is a natural process and no system can prevent all floods.
The Council has powers under the Land Drainage Act 1991(LDA 1991), Highways Act 1980 (HA 1980), and the Coastal Protection Act 1949 (CPA 1949) to ensure private landowners reduce their flood risks. You can find more information on the Land Drainage Act 1991 on Gov.uk.
Routine maintenance is carried out by the Highways and Drainage Services department (HADS). All our work is carried out on a priority basis.
We will aim to:
- give advice to residents on how to reduce flood risks
- have engineers and workers ready to help and check flood defences and drainage systems
- clear roads affected by bad weather
- help evacuate residents and provide temporary accommodation if needed
- respond to emergency requests from the public based on priorities and available resources
- work with other agencies to reduce the impact of floods and storms and keep key services running
In emergencies, we will try to protect the public but may not be able to help all individual homeowners.
