Apply for a dropped kerb

Overview

A dropped kerb allows vehicles to cross the pavement from the road to a driveway.

Use this service to apply and pay for a dropped kerb online.

As part of the application, we will check if you need planning permission for the proposed access.

Eligibility

To get a dropped kerb, your drive must:

  • be more than 4.8 metres long, from your house to where your drive meets the pavement. If you park in front of a main door, your drive must be 5.5 metres long

  • be more than 2.6 metres wide at all points (3.6 metres for disabled access)

  • allow you to drive into the property in one movement. The driveway should be at 90 degrees to the road

  • be at least 10 metres away from main junctions

Tenants

If you are a tenant, you must get permission from your landlord before applying for a dropped kerb.

Driveway measurements

Your drive must be more than 4.8 metres long, from your house to where your drive meets the pavement. Your drive must be more than 2.4 metres wide at all points. If you park in front of a main door, your drive must be 5.5 metres long. Your drive must be more than 2.4 metres wide at all points.

Costs

Application costs

It costs £194 to check if it is possible to construct a dropped kerb at your property. This includes a site inspection. 

If your application is refused, we’ll refund £91.

Planning permission

If you need planning permission, it costs an extra £230. You can pay £25 for a pre-application enquiry to see if permission is likely.

Construction costs

We charge £2224 for a standard dropped kerb made up of:

  • a left-hand "dropper"
  • a right-hand "dropper"
  • 3 drop kerbs

 Any additional kerbs cost £250 each.

Costs will increase if we need to move things like:

  • street lights
  • utility boxes
  • cables
  • trees

You can hire your own contractor. We will check the work meets the agreed standards when it is complete.

Apply

Before you start

It costs £194 to check if it is possible to construct a dropped kerb at your property.

If planning permission is needed, it will cost an additional £230.

To use this service you will need:

  • a debit or credit card 
  • your driveway measurements

After you apply

We'll visit your property to assess your application. This is usually within 10 working days, but if it will take longer we will let you know.

If your application is approved we will send you a self-construction pack. This includes:

  • the standard specifications for an approved dropped kerb
  • a licence agreement
