Apply for a dropped kerb
A dropped kerb allows vehicles to cross the pavement from the road to a driveway.
Use this service to apply for a dropped kerb application for your property and pay for it online.
As part of the application, we will check if you need planning permission for the proposed access.
Guidance
If your driveway doesn’t meet these rules, you can’t get a dropped kerb.
- Driveway length - at least 4.8 metres long (5.5 metres if in front of a main door).
- Driveway width - at least 2.6 metres wide (3.6 metres for disabled access).
- Easy access - you must be able to drive straight in.
- Distance from junctions - at least 10 metres away from main junctions.
Cost
Application costs
- Application fee: £194 to check if a dropped kerb is possible. This includes a site inspection. If refused, you’ll get £91 back.
- Planning permission: If needed, it costs an extra £230. You can pay £25 for a pre-application enquiry to see if permission is likely.
Construction costs
Approved applications will be sent a self-construction pack. This includes the standard specifications for an approved dropped kerb and Licence agreement.
We charge £2224 for a standard dropped kerb made up of:
- a left-hand "dropper"
- a right-hand "dropper"
- 3 drop kerbs
Any additional kerbs cost £250 each.
You can hire your own contractor. We will check the work meets the agreed standards when it is complete.
Costs will increase if street furniture (for example street lights) or trees need to be moved.
