Other works on the Highway
Businesses need permission to use the highway for building works. This is required by the Highways Act 1980.
This includes excavation, hoarding, machinery access, storage containers, and site offices.

Conditions for registration
Businesses need £5 million in insurance and must follow conditions for:
- location
- lighting
- visibility
- pedestrian access.

Cost of Permit
The fee for a highway works permit is £103.50. You need a debit or credit card.
If you wish to extend the permit after the initial 28 day period you must apply for a new permit.
Processing Time
We need at least two working days to check the site and process the application.
Applications are typically processed within 5 working days.
Tacit Consent
No. The authority must process your application before granting it.
