Refugees and asylum seekers
Education is one of the most important services for children and young people who come to the UK.
Refugees and asylum seekers may arrive in the UK:
- with one or both parents
- in the care of older siblings, relatives or customary care givers
- alone as unaccompanied minors
- after experiencing conflict and other traumatic experiences
We provide support for those whose first language is not English or Welsh.
Asylum seekers
An asylum seeker is someone who is:
- seeking international protection
- waiting on a decision on their application for refugee status
- about to apply for refugee status
Until they receive a decision on whether they are a refugee, they are an asylum seeker.
Refugees
A refugee is an asylum seeker whose claim has been successful. They can:
- work in the UK
- claim the same benefits as UK residents
