Parents and carers

We understand how children and young people learn and develop.

Our team of applied psychologists will support their:

  • development
  • learning
  • social and emotional wellbeing

What we do

We help children and young people ages 0-19 experiencing difficulties at school.

To ensure they get the right support, we work with:

  • parent and carers
  • teachers
  • other professionals

Support

We provide a range of support to schools, pupils, parents and carers. This includes:

  • individual casework
  • group work with children
  • training for schools and other professionals
  • supporting schools in raising pupil achievement and promoting school effectiveness
  • working with parents, carers and other agencies
  • research and project work
  • contributing to Local Education Authority (LEA) policy and practice

Educational Psychologist (EP)

Every school in NPT has an identified EP. They often visit schools and are part of their extended support team.

Concerns you may wish to raise with the school could include:

  • the learning progress your child is making
  • how your child manages the school day, emotionally and academically
  • how they are getting on with their classmates
  • something else

With your help, the school will try to improve your child's difficulties at school.

If the school feel they need further help, they will request our support with your consent.

How to access us

School staff and the Additional Learning Needs Co-ordinator (ALNCo) will plan a meeting with the EP at least once a term.

During the meeting they will:

  • prioritise their work according to a pupil's needs
  • explore next steps
  • check if more work is needed from the school, EP or a professional from the Inclusion Service

They will let you know what happens next after the meeting.

Your ALNCo will ask for verbal consent if they are to raise your child’s case at planning.

School visit

During our school visit, we may:

  • talk with your child
  • consult with your child’s teachers
  • observe during classes or on the playground
  • look at your child’s work
  • use assessment materials and tools

You will be updated throughout the process of the work we are doing and how it will help inform our next steps.

After a school visit

After visiting your child’s school we will:

  • share our findings with those concerned
  • provide information to help make decisions on identifying ALN
  • carry out the right support based on our findings

The school will monitor your child’s development and keep you informed of their progress.
