Lost Peatlands Story

Explore the shared memories, histories and cultural traditions that bring the Lost Peatlands to life.

Sharing the Story of the Lost Peatlands

Throughout the project, we worked with local people to collect and celebrate the history, traditions and memories that shape the upland landscapes of the Upper Afan and Upper Rhondda valleys. These personal stories, recollections and cultural connections formed an essential part of The Lost Peatlands Story — a record of how communities have lived with, worked in, and understood these landscapes over generations.

Capturing Local Voices and Memories

We gathered a wide range of community contributions, including:

  • Personal anecdotes and family memories
  • Photographs and historic images
  • Stories, poems and local folklore
  • Traditional recipes, place‑names and cultural knowledge
  • Reflections on past land‑use and community life

These contributions helped us build a richer understanding of the peatlands and the people connected to them.

How the Story Was Shared

Elements of the Lost Peatlands Story were shared through:

  • Our digital mobile app,
  • The project website,
  • Community events across Neath Port Talbot and Rhondda Cynon Taf,
  • School sessions and wellbeing activities,
  • Interpretation along routes and at project sites.

Together, these platforms helped bring the upland heritage of the peatlands to life for both residents and visitors.

Continuing the Story

Although the funded project phase has ended, we continue to welcome stories, memories and materials that help preserve the cultural heritage of the uplands.

If you have photographs, memories, stories, recipes, poems or anything else you’d like to share, we would love to hear from you.
Please contact us for an informal conversation or to send your contribution.
