Mental Health & Well-Being Community Fund

Supporting communities through the Tata Steel transition

The TSUK Mental Health & Well-being Community Fund has been created to support people, families and communities across Neath Port Talbot who have been affected by the Tata Steel transition. The fund aims to strengthen community resilience, improve wellbeing and help local people build positive futures.

Funded through the Tata Steel Transition programme, the scheme will invest in community-led projects within Neath Port Talbot that support mental health and wellbeing, encourage social connections and help our community respond to the challenges that changes have brought.

Funding available

A total of £1.2 million is available through the fund to support eligible projects across Neath Port Talbot. Funding can support both revenue and capital projects.

There are two grant funding streams available:

  • grants: up to £10,000
  • grants: £10,001 to £50,000

Projects can receive up to 100% funding.

What we're looking for

Your project must support at least one of the fund priorities.

Rebuilding social connections and peer support

Projects that:

  • create opportunities for people to come together
  • strengthen community networks and friendships
  • support peer support groups and mutual aid
  • encourage intergenerational activities
  • help rebuild the sense of community and camaraderie often associated with the workplace

Strengthening community resilience

Projects that:

  • build on existing community assets and resources
  • create or improve safe and welcoming community spaces
  • support local people to develop community-led solutions
  • encourage early intervention and prevention

Improving mental health and wellbeing

Projects that:

  • promote positive mental health and emotional wellbeing
  • build self-esteem, resilience and coping skills
  • encourage healthy and purposeful activities
  • support suicide awareness and prevention
  • provide support for families, children and young people
  • help people manage financial pressures, debt or poverty

Addressing health-harming behaviours

Projects that:

  • support positive life changes
  • reduce or prevent harmful behaviours such as smoking, alcohol misuse, drug use or gambling
  • help tackle domestic abuse and violence against women
  • improve physical and mental wellbeing through community activity

Examples of eligible projects

Examples include:

  • community gardens and repair cafés
  • friendship groups, support groups and men's sheds
  • mental health awareness programmes
  • physical activity and wellbeing initiatives
  • community events and cultural activities
  • training for volunteers and community leaders
  • activities for children and young people
  • improvements to community facilities and green spaces
  • volunteering and social action projects

These examples are not exhaustive, and innovative proposals are encouraged. 

Who can apply

Applications are welcome from organisations based in Neath Port Talbot, including:

  • constituted voluntary and community groups
  • registered charities
  • social enterprises
  • companies limited by guarantee
  • co-operatives
  • development trusts
  • local branches of national third-sector organisations
  • Town and Community Councils (for projects that go beyond their statutory responsibilities)
  • Local Authority
All funded projects must be located within Neath Port Talbot. 

What cannot be funded

The fund cannot support:

  • political activities or lobbying
  • exclusively religious activities
  • gifts and donations
  • statutory duties already funded through other sources
  • recoverable VAT
  • fines, penalties or legal costs
  • ongoing costs that are not sustainable beyond the grant period

How to apply

  1. Contact the Fund Project Officer at tatacommunityfund@npt.gov.uk to discuss your proposal.
  2. Submit an Expression of Interest.
  3. Eligible applicants will be invited to submit a full application.
  4. Applications will be assessed and considered by a funding panel.
  5. Successful applicants will receive a grant offer, and the project can begin once all approvals are in place.

Timescales for application

  • Invitations for Expressions of Interest from September 30th 2026
  • Assessment of applications & funding panels will be on a rolling basis
  • Funding must be committed by 31st May 2027
  • Projects must be completed by 30th September 2027
