Building skills to self-employment

Neath Port Talbot resident Charlotte Edward aged 41, a victim of domestic abuse moved to Wales to start a new life. The registered carer for her son, who has autism and arthritis, Charlotte life is hectic but she is determined to earn a wage to support her family. Charlotte enjoys practical hands on work so employment in a trade would be ideal.

NPT Employability funded a 3 day course in Resin Design and Installation. Next NPT Employability contacted Women Construct Wales, a social enterprise that helps women gain new skills in construction and trades. NPT Employability helped Charlotte successfully apply. Learning new trade skills, Charlotte aim is to be self-employed, making and installing epoxy resin flooring. Impressed with the support she received from NPT Employability Charlotte referred her friend Lee.

Lee Llewelyn, aged 38, already had a City and Guilds Level 2 in Plumbing and was on the same course with Charlotte at Women Construct Wales. NPT Employability helped Lee develop her CV, fill out job applications and is searching for a Paid Work Opportunity with an appropriate employer.

Charlotte said, “My creative side loves working with epoxy resin and the flexibility of self-employment is ideal”.

Lee said, “My children are grown up so it’s a great time for me to develop my career. Ideally I would love to become a fully qualified plumber”.

NPT Employability is a Neath Port Talbot Council service and is funded by the UK Government through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund.
