Food for thought for young people in NPT
The Youth Services Horizon Team have given young people in Neath Port Talbot the opportunity to participate in a cooking project during the summer.
Many families are struggling through the cost-of-living crisis with an increased number of people facing food poverty. The project was designed to help tackle this by educating young people on where to source healthy foods that are locally produced, consider recipes that reduce food waste as well as the opportunity to learn basic cooking techniques to create nutritional, healthy meals. Young people were also given the opportunity to gain a Food Hygiene and Allergen awareness qualification.
Over the past few weeks the group have spent time in the Community kitchen learning to prepare and cook basic meals, as well as visiting Swansea Market to speak with local food producers to find out about sustainable, seasonal produce and a visit to a local strawberry pick your own farm.
The group have gained invaluable skills and knowledge about healthy, nutritional foods alongside increasing their confidence, socialising with others and making new friends. Everyone enjoyed participating in the programme and some of the young people are looking to gain employment within the hospitality industry after finding a renewed passion for cooking.
