Volunteer for the Neath Port Talbot Youth Justice Service

Do you want to make a difference in your community?

You can become a volunteer to help young people who are:

  • already involved in the criminal justice system
  • at risk of becoming involved

About the service

We are a multi-agency team working with young people aged 10-18 in the criminal justice system.

We work in partnership with:

  • Local Authority
  • Police
  • Probation
  • Health and Education services

Help and support

We offer help and support for young people to:

  • prevent offending
  • stop re-offending
  • improve community safety
  • understand the impact their crime has on victims
  • take part safely and productively in their communities

Volunteer roles

Volunteers play a key role in helping the young people we support.

We provide full training and support for the following roles:

Referral Order Community Panels

You will attend panel meetings with young people under a 3 to 12 month Referral Order after going to court.

The panel includes:

  • two community volunteers
  • a member of the Youth Justice Service

They support the young person to develop a plan to help them:

  • repair harm caused
  • stay out of trouble

Appropriate Adult Volunteer

If a child or vulnerable adult is held at a police station without an adult, you can act as the appropriate adult.

Volunteer Mentor

You will support young people in various activities to engage in reparation activities.

You can help them:

  • develop essential social skills
  • understand personal relationships
  • take part in health-related programs

Victim Advocate Volunteer

Restorative justice allows the victims and culprits to communicate, allowing everyone involved to:

  • repair any damage caused
  • move forward positively

If a victim seeks answers but doesn't want to meet the young person, a victim advocate can help by:

  • supporting them during the meeting
  • representing them in person

Project Volunteer

Assisting staff during school holidays with running daytime activities. These activities can include:

  • sporting events
  • outdoor pursuits
  • personal development sessions

Bureau Community Panels

You will attend panel meetings to decide outcomes for young people referred to the Youth Bureau instead of Police bail.

Each panel includes a:

  • community volunteer
  • member of the Youth Justice Service
  • representative from South Wales Police
