This course will include an online presentation that will describe and discuss some key habitat and wildlife community features of the Lost Peatlands Landscape. This will be followed (on a separate day) by a field excursion based in the upland plateau area of Glyncastle Forest. In the field we will explore the ecology and biodiversity of a number of key habitats, particularly those in the non-forest component but also those associated with the dynamic forest management cycle. Emphasis will be placed on identifying and classifying habitats and their indicator species. Some important management issues will be outlined and case studies discussed. Peatland hydrology - Fundamentals & Restoration The day will build on the initial talk of April 2020. It will be field-based, and will observe, explain & discuss key aspects of peatland hydrology including: - Key aspects of natural peatland hydrological functioning. - Forms of damage to the hydrology of peatlands. - The utility of hydrology to assess the efficacy of peatland restoration. - Hydrological monitoring techniques & example data. - Techniques for peatland hydrological restoration.
