Supply Chain Fund
Homes as Power Stations (HAPS) is a pioneering project to support the adoption of the ‘HAPS approach’ in the Swansea Bay City Region (SBCR).
The HAPS approach is a way to make homes more energy-efficient and cost-effective. It involves integrating energy-efficient designs and renewable technologies in new and existing homes. The aim is to reduce a home’s reliance on existing energy networks.
Neath Port Talbot Council is leading the project on behalf of the four local authority partners in the SBCR:
- Neath Port Talbot County Borough Council
- City and County of Swansea
- Carmarthenshire County Council
- Pembrokeshire County Council
Project activities
The project is made up of several linked activities, including:
- supporting the adoption of energy-efficient designs and renewable technologies in homes
- developing a sustainable, skilled regional supply chain for renewable technologies in homes
- conducting an extensive monitoring and evaluation programme
Available funding
The £7m Supply Chain Development Fund is available to the Swansea Bay City Region. The fund has three main aims.
- Develop a regional supply chain of technologies to help address fuel poverty.
- Ensure there are enough regional skills to manufacture, install and maintain the technologies.
- Establish the region as a centre for excellence in renewable technologies.
Grants
The grants available are:
- minimum grant - £100,000
- maximum grant - £1 million
We can discuss applications outside of these amounts on a case-by-case basis.
Expression of interest call
We want to gauge the interest in addressing the first aim.
Most of the required technologies are not currently available within the region. They are imported or sourced from other areas of the UK or from overseas. How can your company change this?
The fund intends to identify a potential supply chain that is as wide as possible. The fund will do this through a competitive open call for proposals focused on technologies such as:
- Intelligent Energy Systems (IES)
- heat pumps
- power walls
- battery for domestic dwellings
- solar PV
- infrared
The open call will include:
- start-up companies - to encourage them to invest in these technologies
- small businesses - to enable them to build capacity
- larger companies - to diversify to include these technologies in their product offerings
- inward investment - so businesses can set up, grow, employ local people and support the region's economic development
Outputs and outcomes
There are specific outputs and outcomes which projects need to deliver. These will be monitored and reported as part of the fund's terms and conditions.
Development of a regional supply chain
The first key output is expected to be the successful development of a regional supply chain. This supply chain will focus on HAPS-related environmental technologies and equipment and their:
- manufacture
- sourcing
- installation
- operation
- management
- maintenance
The goal is for the supply chain to be:
- robust
- sustainable
- skilled
- long-lasting, with the potential to establish the region as a centre of excellence
