West Glamorgan Shared Lives Scheme Launches Across Neath Port Talbot and Swansea

03 July 2025

An innovative approach to adult care has officially launched across Neath Port Talbot and Swansea.

West Glamorgan Shared Lives Scheme Launches Across Neath Port Talbot and Swansea

West Glamorgan Shared Lives matches adults who need support with carers who welcome them into their own homes to be part of their family. The scheme is like fostering but for adults.

Whether it’s for a few hours during the day, short-term respite, or long-term care, Shared Lives provides an alternative to traditional live-in care, supported living, or residential care.

The scheme supports people with a wide range of needs, including physical, sensory, and learning impairments, mental health support needs, dementia, and age-related challenges.

As part of the launch, the scheme is actively recruiting new carers across the region. Carers can earn upwards of £500 per week and will receive full training and ongoing support. There are no specific qualifications required—just the right values, a welcoming home, and a genuine desire to make a difference in someone’s life.

Councillor Jo Hale, Neath Port Talbot Council’s Cabinet Member for Adult Social Care, said: “Shared Lives is often a life-changing scheme – not just for the people who are being cared for, but for the carers themselves.”

“By opening your home, you’re offering more than just care – you’re giving someone the chance to be part of a family, to enjoy new experiences, and to build lasting relationships.

“We’re encouraging more people who are interest in becoming a Shared Lives carer to come forward. Full training, support and payment are provided, and the rewards go far beyond financial.”

Swansea Council Cabinet Member for Care Services Cllr Louise Gibbard said: “Shared Lives carers come from all walks of life, but what unites them is their passion, dedication, and drive to make a meaningful difference in people’s lives. This scheme offers them the opportunity to do just that—by supporting adults to build independence, develop friendships, learn new skills, and stay connected within their communities. We’re proud to be working in partnership with Neath Port Talbot Council to bring this valuable service to our residents.”

A new website is now live, offering more information about the scheme and how to apply to become a Shared Lives carer.
