Creative storytelling brings Autumn magic to Gnoll Country Park

Gnoll Country Park was transformed into a hub of imagination and celebration earlier this month when pupils from Neath’s Alderman Davies Primary School joined storyteller Michael Harvey for a day of outdoor adventure, creative writing and cultural storytelling.
Hosted by Neath Port Talbot Libraries and Gnoll Country Park, the event embraced the crisp autumn weather and the joy of learning in nature.
The pupils explored storytelling in the open-air bringing tales to life in the park’s newest feature Cadair Y Gnoll, the Gnoll Throne.
The Gnoll Throne was crafted by local sculptor Garry Turler using wood from the beloved Tree of Many Faces – an ancient beech tree which, due to its many knots and knurls appeared to contain a series of faces. The tree had to be significantly cut back due to natural deterioration.
The throne has now become a stunning new sculpture nestled beside the park’s pond just off a major pathway. Watched over by a dragon, owl, and raven, all carved from the same beech tree, it offers a magical setting for reflection, storytelling, and connection with nature.
Neath Port Talbot Council’s Cabinet Member for Natrure Tourism and Wellbeing, Cllr Cen Phillips, said: “The Tree of Many Faces has always been part of our landscape, Now it returns with new life and meaning and it has been wonderful to see people enjoying the space so much.”
The event also marked Diwali, making it a perfect opportunity to share stories celebrating different cultures. The park team also installed wildlife cameras to observe how nature interacts with the sculptures, adding another layer to the experience.
The transformation of the Tree of Many Faces also includes a wildlife-friendly sculpture overlooking the ponds, featuring expressive faces, a dragon, and a contemplative wood spirit.
The project was funded by the UK Government.
