New Council Leader calls for Neath Port Talbot to be “stronger, fairer and more resilient”
14 October 2026
Scott Jones says “fair funding and protecting vital services” will be top of his agenda as he’s confirmed as the new Leader of Neath Port Talbot Council.
The former Cabinet Member for Streetscene says he’ll also deliver collaborative leadership and delivery of Coalition priorities in the new role.
Following a decision at Full Council today (Wednesday 14th October), Cllr Jones – an Independent Councillor serving the ward of Gwynfi and Croeserw - has now been officially selected for the role.
Speaking in the Chamber, new Council Leader, Cllr Scott Jones spoke of the importance of teamwork for a successful administration:
“As Cabinet Member for Streetscene, I have worked alongside dedicated officers and councillors to secure investment in our communities, improve parks and public spaces, strengthen flood defences, deliver environmental improvements and exceed Welsh Government recycling targets. Those achievements were made possible by teamwork, partnership working and a clear focus on delivering practical results for residents.
“They have reinforced my belief that effective leadership is never about one individual. It is about bringing people together, supporting them and creating the conditions for everyone to contribute. That principle will guide my approach to leading the Council.”
Cllr Scott Jones also set out his budget priorities for his term as Leader:
“A key and immediate priority will be to make the strongest possible case for a fair and sustainable budget settlement for Neath Port Talbot Council. The financial pressures facing local government remain significant, and we will work constructively with our partners to secure the resources needed to protect vital services and support the people who rely on them.”.
Councillor Scott Jones will now take over duties from former Leader Cllr Steve Hunt who resigned in September.
Councillor Carl Jordan will now become the Cabinet Member for Streetscene at Neath Port Talbot Council.
